University of Aberdeen 1966-70: B.Sc. Honours in Geology (Class 2i) with Botany I and II (incl. Ecology II), Zoology I and Chemistry I. Honours Thesis on the Geology of Part of Raasay in the Inner Hebrides (including an account of the vegetation).

University of Sheffield 1970-74: Post-graduate research on the palaeoecology and micropalaeontology of Middle Jurassic rocks in the Inner Hebrides (Raasay, Skye, Eigg and Muck), Ardnamurchan and Sutherland.

University of Sheffield 1974-75: Post-graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with teaching qualification in Biology, Geology and Environmental Studies.

General Teaching Council for Scotland 1975. Registered Teacher (Secondary) of Biology: Geology: General Science. Registration achieved after full-time teaching for two years.

Essex County Council Education Department 1975-77: Various in-service training courses for teachers - particularly Environmental Education.

Polytechnic of Central London 1976: Part-time course in Scientific Photography.

University of Leicester 1983-85: Department of Museum Studies. Two three-week residential courses in Museum Studies towards Museums Association Diploma successfully completed. [Final examinations for Museums Diploma not completed due to move to North Devon in 1986 to take up new Museums Officer post, after which no opportunity to complete].

University of Leicester 1984: Department of Museum Studies. Special one-week Natural Sciences Curatorial Course (in association with Biology Curators Group and Geological Curators Group) successfully completed.

Area Museum Council for the South West and Museums & Galleries Commission 1986-1993: Various in-service training courses in Museum Curation, Museum Registration and Management including Business Planning.

North Devon District Council 1986-1993: Various in-service training courses for Managers including Business Planning.

Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council 1994-2009: Various in-service training courses for Managers.

West Midlands Regional Museums Council 1994-2009: Various in-service training courses for museum professionals including management and cross-domain working.
